KIOSK

KIOSK ki•osk a small portable and adaptable cubicle from which papers, refreshments and events are distributed.

Capital Art Projects has developed kiosk to broadcast audio and visual information to a wide audience in a variety of different contexts. The concept for the structure and its programme has strong associations with the Russian Constructivist’s multifunctional ‘agitation stands’ and kiosks of the 1920s as a tool for circulating propaganda. At specific times during ‘The Event’, KIOSK will inhabit the streets of Birmingham broadcasting information about the festival’s activities and providing a place for conversation, exchange and a platform for activity. Capital Art Projects has invited a range of artists and curators to respond to KIOSK through a variety of event-based activities including performances, workshops and broadcasts. Equally effective whilst stationary or mobile, kiosk’s interior and exterior have been developed to accommodate a wide range of uses, including audio broadcast, printing, and dispensing food, while it can also be employed as a meeting place. Depending on each activity, the KIOSK will be reconfigured to provide an open, closed, sheltered, shared or intimate space. Through public engagement and collaboration additional uses for KIOSK will be explored.

KIOSK has been developed by Capital Art Projects, and its design and construction has been realised in collaboration with artist/designer Jon Roome.
